SYNTH WHEN CONCERT

At 8pm Michael Snow, Thomas Lehn, James Montgomery, and Tania Gill will perform in a variety of configurations.

2004 happens to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Robert Moog's entry into the reconfiguration of musical keyboard instruments. Synth When links with the Moogfest: A 50-Year Celebration of Synths Inventor to be honored at B.B.King's (NYC) this same day. It was 50 years ago that American maverick inventor Robert Moog began developing instruments that altered the course of modern music for all time and have since become an integral part of our musical culture. Moog's namesake analog synthesizer helped shape the sound of the world as we know it.

Thomas Lehn

Since the early 1980s Thomas Lehn has been working as a performer, interpreter, composer and improviser of contemporary music. His individual style of musical expression is rooted in the experience of a broad spectrum of musical fields. After studying recording engineering at the Hochschule fuer Musik in Detmold (Germany), he moved to Cologne and studied both classical and jazz piano at the Hochschule fuer Musik Koeln. The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue synthesizers of the late 1960s. The facilities of these instruments - e. g. to modify electronic sounds very directly as well as to combine and to control several parameters at the same time - allows him to spontaneously act and react in close contact with the process of tension, space and structure of the music during its performance. In 2000 his first solo CD 'Feldstaerken' has been released on German label random acoustics. His present ensemble activities include duets with Gerry Hemingway and Marcus Schmickler, whose CDs 'Tom & Gerry' and 'Bard' has been released on Erstwhile Records, Guenter Christmann, who published the CD 'temps duree' on his own label edition explico, and Eugene Chadbourne, with whom he published 'c inside' on grob. Other duos with Paul Lovens and Raymond Strid are preparing their first record releases. Moreover he collaborates in trios with Tim Hodgkinson and Roger Turner (KONK PACK; CD 'Big Deep' out on grob), Phil Minton and Axel Doerner (TOOT), Radu Malfatti and Phil Durrant ('beinhaltung' and 'dach' released on Fringes and Erstwhile), Peter van Bergen and Gert-Jan Prins (E-RAX, 'live at the bimhuis' out on X-OR), John Bucher and Andy "Ex" Moor, Hannes Loeschel and Josef Novotny (ANTASTEN) and with Wolfgang Fuchs and Fabrizio Spera (LINGUA; 'Lingua' out on oaksmus). Larger ensembles are VARIO 34 a sextet with Guenter Christmann, Alexander Frangenheim, Mats Gustafsson, Paul Lovens and Christian Munthe ('vario-34' and 'water writes only in plural' released by edition explico and concepts of doing); GLASSBAND, a quintet with Phil Wachsmann, Evan Parker, Alexander Frangenheim and Roger Turner; and last, but not least MIMEO, the Music in Movement Electronic Orchestra, which includes 12 representatives of contemporary electronic music from 7 European nations.

THERMAL TRIO

THERMAL TRIO is a set of improvisations by Andy Moor, John Butcher and Thomas Lehn. Taking the sonic possibilities of their respective instruments (electric guitar, saxophones and EMS synth) through surprising and playful avenues, this is an exquisite example of the meeting of three experienced improvisers, each bringing to this exchange the perspective of their mixed musical backrounds.

Andy Moor
is known for his long time association with the EX , Kletka Red, and Dog Faced Hermans, he has a original vibrant style of guitar playing and in recent years has collaborated with many musicians in the improvised music scene. Amsterdam resident Andy, operates the unsounds label and uncannily is a fulcrum in this years’ VTO and FIMAV. As well as the Thermal and EX alignments, Andy helped usher the Lori Freedman/Kaffe Matthews duo into being by playing a squat gig with them after the Electronic Extensions Festival in the Hague 1998.

John Butcher
is one of the most highly respected saxophone players of our time, as a solo artist he performs worldwide and is associated with musicians such as Phil Minton, Gerry Hemingway , and Derek Bailey. Recently released Spool (Canada) Label w/Mike Hansen and Tomasz Krakowiak, and immediately upcoming BBC recording w/Sarah Peebles and Nilan Perera.

Thomas Lehn
has an individual style of musical expression that is rooted in the experience of a broad spectrum of musical fields that encompasses contemporary classical music and new electronic improvisation. The electronic equipment he uses consists of analogue synthesizers of the late 1960s. He is associated with musicians such as Gerry Hemingway and Marcus Schmickler, Eugene Chadbourne, Gert-Jan Prins, Peter van Bergen and Mimeo amongst many others and the trio Konk Pack.

Kaffe Matthews (UK) + Lori Freedman (CAN)

Lori Freedman
'Solo clarinet never sounded so human and wildly curious, deeply soulful - swooping, swooning naked intimacy. Listening becomes half of a privileged conversation.'' (Juan Rodriguez, The Montreal Gazette) Conspicuously described as "a musical revolutionary", Lori Freedmanis known internationally as one of Canada's most provocative and creative performers. Her work includes contemporary, improvised and electroacoustic music, and she frequently collaborates with dance, theatre and visual artists.

Kaffe Matthews
is one of the most active artists on the new electronic music scene, whose surprisingly rare approach exploiting digital gadgets and live performance has resulted in some unique works that transgress any boundary between sound and image. Since 1996 she has been regularly performing all over the world in clubs, galleries, concert halls, tea rooms, boats, warehouses and the outback, releasing the best of these events on the six cd's, 'cd Ann', 'cd Bea', 'cd cecile', 'cd dd', 'cd eb and flo' presenting an annual document of her ever developing sound worlds.

latest update: 30th June 2003 from http://www.theex.nl/

"Starting out as an anarcho-punk band from Amsterdam and Wormer, The Ex has developed over the years into a melting pot of divergent musical styles, interweaving noise, folk, jazz and ethnic music, under one unique umbrella: Ex-music. Other features are the discordant, highly rhythmic guitar work, the rolling almost African drumming style and the furious way in which Sok delivers his often sarcastic lyrics. In the first few years The Ex denounce political and social evils in their typical black and white manner, and its members, active in the squat movement, come across as genuinely driven and committed individuals. They set a significant example for the alternative music circuit by the manner in which their records, accompanied by posters, booklets and other relevant readings, are released and distributed by the group itself."

Han Bennink and Brodie West

Instant Composer's Pool originator, Dutch master drummer Han Bennink will tour Canada with youngblood Toronto saxophonist Brodie West. The duo have performed together in the Netherlands during Brodie's frequent studies with pianist/instant composer Misha Mengelberg and in June, 2003 they forged their alliance in an intimate studio recording session on Toronto Island. Han is THE pioneering European jazz percussionist who has now added the emerging talent of Brodie West to the highly esteemed fraternity of duelists with whom Han has performed/recorded (Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, Peter Brotzmann). The double-the-Dutch billing in Toronto follows recent touring activities of The Ex w/ Han Bennink in Ethiopia, and previews Han’s solo set prior to The Ex in the finale concert at Victoriaville this year.

CHANTALE LAPLANTE (PQ) +
CHARLOTTE HUG (CH)

Brilliant Days. Moments in time are twisted and magnified to reveal the innate groove of happenstance. Together, Charlotte Hug and Chantale Laplante grind and spin the imaginary sounds of daydreams and sleepless nights, creating transformations that quiver and resist. This is the fecund and blustery sound technology makes when filtered through a kaleidoscope of earthbound elements and wind-battered acoustics. This collaboration plays itself out in the place between the visceral and the ethereal - tethered to the ground and sweating, and yet something's snagged and blowing in the crystal atmosphere.

In addition to solo performances at international music festivals, theatres and museums, Charlotte Hug is a member of the London Improvisers Orchestra and the Swiss Centre for Computer Musik. She improvises, both freely and conceptually, with such performers as John Butcher, John Edwards, Phil Minton, Maggie Nicols, Evan Parker, Elliott Sharp and Phil Wachsmann. Her domain encompasses performance, composition, improvisation, visual art, electro-acoustics, concert installations, film and musical theatre. Audibly influenced by her work with electronics, Charlotte's experiments with tuning and bowing elucidate her profound relationship with the viola. Rosin clouds burst and settle as her bow scrapes across strings as thick as bulrushes. Hers is the sound of friction and sonority.

Chantale Laplante’s music is borne out of the elaboration of atmospheres, inviting both collaborator and listener to dive into the centre of the poetic resonance of sound. She has composed for orchestra and chamber orchestra, solo instruments and electro acoustic music. A pianist by training, she studied with Andre Prevost, Michel Longtin, Francis Dhomont and Jonathan Harvey. She cites Debussy and Feldman as having had a significant impact on her work, sharing, as she does, their preponderance for sonic impressionism and their fascination with melody and motif. The focus of her compositions and improvisations ranges from the minutia, wherein she experiments with timbre and the quality of specific sounds, to broad explorations involving polyphony, the aesthetics of texture, the contrast and complement of acoustic and electronic sounds, and the blurring of the notions of time and space. ON THE ROAD WITH ELLERY ESKELIN
w/ Andrea Parkins & Jim Black...the film!

On a last-minute whim while packing to go on the road, Ellery Eskelin decided to bring along his camcorder and a bagful of blank tapes. After three weeks on tour he came back with 25 hours of video from all across the European continent, including live performances, interviews, local color and a generous helping of road schtick. In the ensuing months Ellery put in countless late nights editing this bounty down to a one hour program.
Now you can join Ellery Eskelin, Andrea Parkins and Jim Black on their 2003 European tour with this homespun and engaging video tour diary. Travel with them in taxis, trains and vans and sit on stage with them as the band performs for audiences from Paris to Poland. Get an insiders' view of life on the road, complete with flashes of brilliance, boredom and silliness tempered with a general lack of sleep yet fueled by adrenaline and a love of performing.
The backbone of the program is a series of solo concerts done by Eskelin, Parkins & Black at the Festival Les 100 Ciels in Nancy, France, which are interspersed throughout the video. Also included are band performances from Germany, Poland and the U.K. as well as Paris appearances with guest vocalist Jessica Constable. Don't miss this look behind the scenes of one of today's most celebrated jazz/improv ensembles, now in its tenth year!
